Our favorite gauge of inflation is the price of cabrito. When inflation is low, or when Mexico is cheaper to travel in, cabrito costs about $10-$11 on the border. When Mexico is "expensive" cabrito costs $14-$15.
Right now, a cabrito dinner will cost about $13-$14.
There are bargains in Mexico, and Mexico can still be a bargain. However, economics isn’t the key to Mexico travel any more. Hotels, restaurants and shops are as expensive, if not more so, in Mexico’s major cities and resorts as in the U.S. and Canada. But bargains can be found. Most resorts have a downtown or older area that has clean, more economical hotels. Local restaurants have freshly prepared dishes with regional character at more economical prices.
Gasoline costs. In today's world, gasoline under $3.00 a gallon is still a bargain of sorts. Diesel costs much less than in the States. There are two grades of gasoline in Mexico, Magna Sin (regular unleaded) and Premium (equivalent to super unleaded). Click the Consultar button below, for the Mexico Profeco site. Click the top choice under Gasolina for the page with gas prices. Click the Consultar button there for both the cost of gas and a nifty calculator to determine how much it will cost to fill your tank. Prices are in pesos, so divide by the current exchange rate or roughly 10.5 or 11 pesos to the US dollar (depending on your mathematical ability).
NELSON TIP Mexico's markets (not supermarkets but mercados) have fresh fruits and vegetables at low prices, and often have arts and craft items cheaper than in the tourist zones. Just ask for el mercado central. Mexico’s smaller towns and cities are much more economical than the resorts and large cities, another reason to experience Mexico by car.
Moderately-priced hotels will run about $40-$50 for two. Most hotels do not take pets, but you can probably sneak them in if they are well-behaved. RV parks cost about $18-$25.
